Members of the National Cartoonists Society should have received the official brochure for the 2017 Reuben Award Weekend in their mailboxes in the last few days (cover art by Tom Richmond shown). With it goes the announcement of the speaker lineup and special award winner:
• Wacom and Ginger Meggs cartoonist Jason Chatfield present “Wacom Made Easy”
• Graham Dury and Simon Thorp of Britain’s VIZ discuss their wildly popular and outrageous cartoon magazine.
• Hi and Lois and Beetle Bailey cartoonist Brian Walker presents Reuben Legends, a history of the Reuben Award weekends.
• Red and Rover cartoonist Brian Basset presents “Everything I learned about cartooning I didn’t learn in kindergarten.”
• Dark Horse Comics Publisher Mike Richardson will present a personal approach to comics history.
• The Simpsons Creator Matt Groening, Director David Silverman, and writer Tom Gammill will talk about life “On the Couch with The Simpsons”.
• Ernie Pook’s Comeek creator Lynda Barry will speak about her career in cartooning and also receive the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award at the 71st Annual Reuben Awards Dinner.
• Animator Bill Plympton will present a program of his inventive and hilarious cartoons at the Farewell Buffet & Movie Night.
Our master of Ceremonies for the Reuben Awards Dinner will be that irrepressible and charismatic cartoonist and illustrator, NICK GALIFIANAKIS!
The 71st Annual NCS Reuben Awards Weekend will take place in Portland, OR from May 26th-28th, 2017.
NCS membership is open to all creative professionals who earn a substantial part of their income working in the fields of cartooning, illustration, animation and graphic storytelling. We are an organization of esteemed peers and we welcome new members!
