Cartoonists to Show Gratitude for Frontline Workers in June 7 Sunday Funnies Event

June 6, 2020

As a thank you to the incredible first responders and generous volunteers working to keep everyone safe and healthy, the National Cartoonist Society is rallying the comic industry for a June 7th Sunday funny pages event to show their gratitude.

The brainchild of Baby Blues cartoonist Rick Kirkman, this initiative finds more than 70 cartoonists participating in a newspaper ‘I Spy’ game that will find symbols of gratitude hidden throughout each of their strips as a message of thanks for the dedicated frontline workers who have risked and sacrificed during this crisis.

The symbols of gratitude that will be hidden are: a mask (for medical workers and caregivers), a steering wheel (for people who move our deliveries, supplies, mail etc.), a shopping cart (for grocery workers and farmers), an apple (for teachers), a fork (for restaurant and food service workers) and a microscope (for medical researchers). Cartoonists can include the symbols in their drawings overtly, deviously hidden, part of their gags, or integrated naturally, based on their preference and style.

In addition to appearing in newspapers around the country, all the comics, including additional art by webcomic creators and others, will be featured on ComicsKingdom.com and GoComics.com. Their cartoonists will also have the opportunity to share their favorite charity, which will be included alongside their artwork.
