I am a cartoonist/illustrator from Michigan with a wife and two children. I grew up with a passion for comic strips and animation while being blessed with a supportive family. I have approached my artistic journey as one of a child, leaning into what I love while developing my skills and knowledge. After not drawing for a period during my teenage years into adulthood due to feeling inadequate at drawing realism, I returned to drawing upon having my children, embracing it for the sheer joy of creating. For years, I included what we referred to as “backpack doodles” in their lunches to ease separation anxiety as they started school. My enthusiasm and drive have only increased in the time since. Behind faith and my family, cartooning is what I absolutely love, and I long for the opportunity to continue doing so at a higher level. The Gercs are my original cartoon and an oasis from reality. The Gercs live in a mythical place aptly named Gercland. It is a whimsical land of fantasy and whimsy. These humble and joyful characters appeal to both young and old, while proving that you may grow old but you never have to grow up. I aim for these cartoons to be something children can find humor in while adults can relate to, while finding a refuge from an otherwise hectic or stressful lifestyle. Gercland is, in many ways, an optimal version of our own reality. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it is nirvana, as there is still sadness, pain, etc. Rather, it is a place of minimal work and maximum happiness; a place where worry is often replaced with happiness and pain is replaced with comfort. Gerc’s thoughtfulness is encouraged, but ignorance is not looked down upon. Their nature is sometimes unusual, beautiful, and unspoiled by our societal progression. If you can recall a time in your life when things were simple, happy, and full of possibilities, then you have found the entrance to your own personal corner of Gercland! By bringing their world to life, I hope to share the happiness that I experience. I pray it transports all who view it to a place where their imaginations can run wild and they are not limited to the world around them. My goal is for the Gercs to appeal to everyone’s youthful enthusiasm, convey a sense of imagination, and be thought-provoking. I hope we can all be neighbors together in Gercland!
